Making Biotechnology Work For Newzealand

 

 

 

Biotechnology holds great promise for solving many of the world's looming challenges from energy and food shortages; To the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of intrac table diseases; To enviromenmental waste, pollution, and global warming.

 

As such the industry is poised to impact mankind, markets, and economic development at least as much as any technological advancement in human history. Although for many biotechnology remains technical, perplexing, and unapproachable, the industry has evolved from being highly specialised and regulated to being an increasingly mainstream capability with economy-wide implications and diverse commercial applications. Building a competitive bioeconomy capable of capturing the economic potential of this transforming market shift requires efficient technology development and transfer, focused experimentation and entrepreneurship, and global linkages to rapidly experiment, scale, and exploit the value of intellectual property exclusivity periods. The New Zealand bioeconomy, with two-thirds of its public and private sector stakeholders in the research and development stage, is at a critical crossroads. New Zealand can choose to mobilise a coordinated effort to achieve global competitiveness, and benefit from a wide range of biotech applications and related technology spillover benefits; or be relegated to bystander status with a limited capacity to shape her own destiny in an increasingly biologic world.
