A capabilities-based approach to productive and innovative R&D  
 

 

 

R&D in the Life Sciences (LS), especially on a global scale, is difficult to manage. For many companies, the struggle to maintain a sustainable pipeline and drive growth while controlling costs has resulted in fragmented, unwieldy R&D organizations and inadequate results. LS companies that learn to manage R&D as an integrated set of capabilities become more agile, efficient and better positioned to innovate in a changing industry. We have developed and helped a number of companies implement a capabilities-based view of R&D that allows them to better understand the strengths and challenges of each component of their R&D organization. This methodology is designed to help executives align R&D activities to their strategic business objectives.
