The wholesales to pharmacies, grocery stores and hospitals was up 7% from the previous year. The growth rate remained in the order of 7% in 2007 and therefore 2008 brought about no major . All in all, the medicine wholesales to pharmacies, grocery stores and hospitals was 1,975 million euro.

The wholesales to pharmacies grew by 7% to about 1,457 million euro. Preion-only medicines accounted for 1,294 million euro, or about 88% of the wholesales to pharmacies. The sales of self-care medicines to pharmacies was 174 million euro, an increase of almost 6% while the sales to hospitals was 485 million euro, 7% more than in 2007.

Breaking down the wholesales by medicine groups, the largest group in terms of sales value were the nervous system medicines (403 million euro), while the antineoplastics and immunomodulators showed the most rapid growth (11% to 302 million euro).

The top ten of the best selling medicines d only slightly compared with 2007 whereas the s are much more marked over a period of five years. Besides the expiry of patents and extension of the generic substitution, legislative amendments have also played an important role in the sales of major medicines. Comparing the list of the ten best selling medicines in 2004 with those in 2008, only five products have retained their position in the list.
In 2008, the public reimbursements of medicines were 1,243 million euro. The value of the reimbursements grew by 8.8% while the value of the sales of the reimbursed medicines
grew by 8.3% to 1,170 million euro. The almost 9% increase in the value of the reimbursements is the nominal growth including inflation. If the general price level increase
is eliminated, the growth of the reimbursements is less than 5%. This was the objective set by the Government in its budgetary framework decisions for 2008.
