This 2007 White Paper from The European Medical Research Councils “Present Status and Future Strategy for Medical Research in Europe” aims to strengthen and improve European medical research, which in turn will result in better healthcare and improved human welfare. In Europe and in the rest of the world we are facing rapid changes in society with globalisation, new emerging and rapidly spreading infectious diseases, changed disease
patterns with treatment-resistant tuberculosis, rapid and dramatic climate changes and, in Europe, a changed demography with an ageing population.

Medical research is essential to cope with these future challenges. Furthermore, new knowledge in the field of medical science is important to facilitate greater success for the European medical industry.
