Under the National Nanotechnology Strategy (NNS), the Australian Office of Nanotechnology (AON) is required to report annually to the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research on the implementation of the NNS and nanotechnology development in Australia more generally. This first annual report covers the period of 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008.
The introduction to the report provides some general information about nanotechnology, a global perspective and information about the Australian nanotechnology capability.

The main part of the report is divided into three sections:

? information on financial support for nanotechnology in Australia during the reporting period
? progress in implementing the National Nanotechnology Strategy (NNS), presented in a way

   that reflects the structure of the NNS Implementation Plan1
? other nanotechnology activities at the Commonwealth and state and territory levels.

The next NNS annual report will allow comparisons of levels of support for nanotechnology in Australia and types of activities. It will also start to identify any new trends and arising issues.
