Healthier Lives for All Americans
Through Discovery
National Institutes of Health in the 2011 Budget
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports the discovery of knowledge and therapies that will lead to better health outcomes for all Americans. NIH accomplishes this goal through a robust program of intramural and extramural research, education, and training conducted or sponsored by 27 Institutes and Centers.
The 2011 Budget provides $32.1 billion in appropriations for NIH (see Table), an increase of $1.0 billion or 3.2 percent above the 2010 enacted level. The 2011 Budget continues to support biomedical research across a broad range of scientific and health opportunities. Investments will focus on five strategic priorities with great promise: applying genomics and other high-throughput technologies; translating basic science discoveries into new and better
treatments and diagnostics; using science to enable health care reform; global health; and reinvigorating and empowering the biomedical research community. NIH will also continue to award and oversee the $10.4 billion provided in the Recovery Act. The Administration remains committed to alleviating the impact of cancer and has retooled the initiative to focus on specific scientific advances in the short, medium and long term.
