2007-2010 Economic Development Strategy

Summary

Waterloo Region is an extraordinarily dynamic metropolitan economy, rich in industrial heritage while supporting innovative advances in technology, education and the arts. As the central hub of the region, Kitchener’s economy will begin to focus less on suburban industrial land, and more on building a healthier urban economy.
In 2004, following extensive public engagement, the City of Kitchener developed an ambitious, one-of-a-kind economic development strategy that would modernize and diversify Kitchener’s economy. The strategy has lead to new economic clusters in knowledge creation and life sciences, stimulated investment in Kitchener’s downtown, and supported mature industries with new employment lands.
Today, issues of climate change, demographic change, growth management, creative city movements and mass collaboration continue to reshape the world’s economy.
In stride, the City of Kitchener continues to reshape its own economic strategy by embracing a mindset of constant innovation. With a fluid and inclusive long-term outlook, and through strategic investments and partnerships, the 2007- 2010 strategy advances the 2004 strategy in six key areas.

3) Creating, attracting, retaining and developing talent
4) Building a dynamic downtown
5) Putting more contaminated lands back to work
6) Growing small business
