The research-based pharmaceutical industry is a global leader of innovation and operates at the very frontiers of scientific discovery. In 2011 alone, pharmaceutical companies invested over USD $135 billion1 on research and development (R&D) of new medicines and vaccines to improve patients’ daily lives. Despite the growing scientific and regulatory challenges of the past decade, over 340 new medicines have been introduced since 2002.2 A large proportion of the global health gains seen over the past century can be attributed to innovative medicines and vaccines.
