Executive summary
The UK has one of the best research bases in the world. It is a fertile source of new knowledge, discovery and invention, helping to create totally new technologies that will our world in the future.
Our emerging technologies and industries programme scans the research base to identify new technologies just as they are emerging and accelerates their adoption and use, helping to shape our future world and put the UK at the centre of global cutting-edge technology innovation.
An emerging technology is one that is still emerging from, or has only recently emerged from, the research base. It allows you to do something that was not possible before, or was only possible in theory; and, because of this, it disrupts existing markets, and leads to new ways of improving our lives and new sources of wealth generation.
We have an ambitious vision. Within a decade we want to see the UK poised to lead the world in one or more major new growth sectors of around ￡1bn turnover from an emerging technology area.
We will be increasing investment in our emerging technologies and industries programme and expect to commit more than ￡50m during the lifetime of this strategy. In doing so we will work with our partners in industry and the research sector to identify emerging technologies, to create truly national programmes in emerging fi elds, and to establish the critical mass of skills and capability that will help the UK to be fastest to global markets. At the appropriate point of technology emergence, the work will be integrated into core Innovate UK programmes.

영국, 7대 미래 첨단신기술에 4년간 5천만 파운드 투자
■ 기술전략위원회는 ‘첨단 신기술 및 산업 전략(emerging technologies & industry strategy) 2014-2018‘을 통해 7대 신기술 및 투자 지원 계획을 발표(2014.11.5)
○ 새로운 시장을 창출하거나, 기존시장을 획기적으로 대체할 수 있는 기술을 선정하여 초기 개발단계에서부터 상업화를 목표하여 미래시장을 선점한다는 계획
○ 2014년-2018년까지 5,000만 파운드를 투자하여, 10년 후 10억 파운드 규모의 산업으로 성장시키는 것이 목표
■ R&D 역량, 미래 시장으로의 발전 가능성 등을 고려하여 잠재력이 높은 7가지 첨단 신기술을 선정

비동물 기술 Non-animal Technologies |
·생명체 내부가 아니라 시험관 같이 제어가 가능한 환경에서 실험(in-vitro)하는 기술 ·안정성과 신뢰도를 높여 약물전달(drug discovery), 신약 임상실험부터 줄기세포 관련 생명과학분야에까지 적용 가능 |

합성생물학 Synthetic Biology |
·수요에 맞춰 생화학적으로 합성하여 신물질을 개발하는 기술 ·신약?백신?바이오 연료 등에 적용 가능 |
■ 선정된 기술은 전담관리 조직, 공동투자프로그램, 기술이전 지원 등 집중관리가 될 예정
○ 신기술 운영그룹(steering group) 구성을 통한 관리 감독
- 기업인, 투자자, 연구지원기관, 정부, 학계 등으로 구성하며, 신기술 분야의 지속적 모니터링과 새로운 첨단 기술을 발굴
○ 가능성이 있는 연구 기반의 첨단 신기술을 식별하고, 미래 시장 크기를 예측하여 기술의 잠재력을 평가
○ 유망 분야에 대한 투자 규모를 확대하고 공동 투자 프로그램 마련
○ 첨단 신기술 상용화를 위한 기술이전 지원
- 기술시연(technology demonstrators), 응용프로그램시연(application demons -trators), 상용응용프로그램시연(commercial application demonstrators) 등 모든 단계에 적극적으로 투자
- 유럽 연합(EU)의 Horizon 2020 프로그램 등 해외 자금을 추가적으로 지원받을 수 있도록 지원
○ 초기 단계에서의 첨단 신기술 육성을 위한 지원
- 첨단 신기술에 대한 커뮤니티를 구축하고, 신기술 개발을 위한 초창기 지원으로 혁신/지식센터를 만들어 지속적으로 투자
