IRB SUMMIT 2011, Daegu, Korea
In the time of increasing interest in global research and development of IRB capacity, the Daegu Catholic University will host the “2011 IRB SUMMIT” with the Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) on April 21-23, 2011 at the Hotel Inter-Burgo in Daegu, Korea. It will be sponsored by Ministry of Health and Welfare, Medi-City Daegu / Medi-Cluster, Middleton Foundation for Ethical Studies, CIMI (Comprehensive and Integrative Medicine Institute), KoNECT (Korea National Enterprise for Clinic Trials), and KAIRB (Korean Association of Institutional Review Boards).
Daegu Medi-Cluster has been focused on new innovative medicine developments such as drugs, medical devices, and regenerative medicine, and will be established with national funding as government initiatives. Furthermore, Daegu Catholic University Medical Center and Daegu Korean Medicine Center also have national funding to establish CIMI as a government initiatives. These national projects are more focused on globalization of new products. For the globalization and the successful establishment of these two greatest national projects for innovative medicine development, IRB infrastructure is the first step and progress towards global clinical research has been emphasized by this first step.
As the result of recognition of the importance of IRB capacity, greatest significant international IRB conference was held in March last year (March, 18-19, 2010) in collaboration with WIRB. And, as one more important step, DCUMC has entered into a MOU with WIRB in September last year.
This year’s Summit follows the success of the international conference held in March last year and the MOU with WIRB. For this IRB SUMMIT 2011, it is a great honor host authoritative and representative figures in related fields including key members of the US Department of Health and Human Services and Dr. Angela J. Bowen, the founder of WIRB. Also, the WIRB Fellow Association will have an organizational meeting during the Summit period. It will be the first time the WIRB Fellow Association meeting will be held outside of the US, a testament to the advancement of ethical awareness in medical and human research in Korea, especially Daegu.
The accomplishments that we have achieved up to now are the result of the dedication and effort of all of you. We would like to take the Summit as a chance to thank you and give back to all those involved, and look forward to your continued and greater interest and participation on this year’s Summit.
