This briefing paper discusses the state of the art of nanotechnology R&D and products in food and nutrition. After a short explanation of what nanotechnology is, present and expected future applications of nanotechnology in agriculture and food are discussed. The paper then follows the debate on food safety considerations which has emerged and discusses public awareness of nanotechnology in general and of applications of nanotechnology in food.
 
 
The aim of this briefing paper is to deliver concise, correct and balanced information to advance public debate among consumers, media, policy makers, producers and researchers as part of the European Commission-funded Nanobio-RAISE project.1 It results from the combined contributions of natural and social scientists, industrialists, and governmental and public interest organisations across Europe. It is intended to provide information and does not represent the views or policy of the European Commission or any other body.
