This report notes current trends in new gene sequencing and related technologies, based on observations received from MoRST’s scanning network. Gene sequencing technologies have improved markedly in the last few years, resulting in both dramatic reductions in sequencing costs and significant improvements in the speed at which sequences can be generated.

 

These developments are revolutionising approaches in many fields, such as health care, animal and plant breeding, biosecurity, forensics, conservation, and industrial processes. While considerable progress has been made in reducing the costs of sequencing human genomes, it is unlikely in the short term that costs will be low enough for routine clinical use. Other barriers include making sense of the wealth of genetic data and the absence of quality assurance standards.

 

Nonetheless, there is increasing use of more sophisticated genetic information in many fields and a move away from simply identifying genes to describing genetic and cellular networks. Implications of this are considered....계속
