2nd International Symposium on Guava and Other Mirtaceas
The International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS) and the EC INCO-DEV-2- funded GUAVAMAP project announce the “2nd International Symposium on Guava and Other Myrtaceae”. The symposium will be held in November 2008 in Mexico and consists of 3 individual parts: The main symposium (GUAVAMAP I) will be held at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel in Mérida (Yucatán) from November 10-13, 2008 and covers areas of biodiversity and genetic resources; biotechnologies such as tissue culture, DNA marker application, pathogen diagnostics and control, biofertilizers, biopesticides and others; linkage map
construction and QTL mapping, and related topics. A half-day poster session is planned to complement oral presentations. The official language is English. Local co-organizer of this symposium is the Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY) in Mérida.

The satellite symposium (GUAVAMAMAP II; November 17-18, 2008) will deal specifically with guava breeding, production, post-harvest management, and processing. It is organized by Dr. Saul Padilla (INIFAP-Campo Experimental Pabellón) in Aguascalientes (Northern
Mexico). Aguascalientes is located within the largest area of guava production in Mexico close to a region called “Calvillo-Cañones” in the states of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. A field trip is planned for November 19, 2008.

The main symposium in Mérida will be followed by practical courses (GUAVAMAP III) at the CICY (Mérida). They last for 3 weeks (November 17 – December 5, 2008) with 2 weeks of biotechnology (“DNA marker application to the molecular analysis of tropical fruit trees”)
followed by 1 week of bioinformatics for a maximal number of 15 selected students and young scientists. A restricted number of fellowships to cover travel and accommodation is available for participation to the main symposium (GUAVAMAP I) and the practical
courses (GUAVAMAP III).
