Executive summary
The 2010 edition of the “Report on Biotechnologies in Italy”, by Assobiotec and Ernst & Young, in cooperation with Farmindustria and ICE, adopts the Ernst & Young definition of “biotech company”, which allows “benchmarking” operations between the Italian and the other main
countries’ biotech.
The Italian biotech is young but rapidly growing In spite of the difficult international situation, the Italian biotech industry is constantly growing and a census revealed that by the end of 2009 there were 319 companies involved with research and development in the biotech
field, of which 187 considered to be “pure biotech”, according to Ernst & Young’s definition.
The Italian biotech field is new and developing: most of the companies have been set up between the late 90’s and the early 2000. Of the total, 53% originated with start-up mechanism
and 24% as academic spin-offs. From a size point of view, the pure biotech companies are mostly micro (41%) or small (27%).
