Think of genomics as a board game (the pun is intentional). At stake is the future of your company. The rules are still being written and will as you proceed. The object is to master an infant science and a multi-billion $ market which does not yet exist.

First, choose a strategy. Will you supply diagnostic tests, gene therapies, protein therapies, small molecule therapies or a combination? Perhaps you might prefer to market disease prevention products.

To proceed, throw a double six. You must discover a product and simultaneously master the novel technologies required to develop and market it. Take a look at the other players; not only your existing pharmaceutical competitors but those emerging companies, which regard genomics as their ticket into the healthcare business. Some dismiss your pharmaceutical pedigree as irrelevant, intellectual ballast. Others covet your spending power and talk seductively about synergy.

Will you play alone or a partner? Will you source and control the population data needed by your researchers? And will you supply the counselling and education needs of patients and their clinicians? Before you decide, work out which will be a legislative requirement and which might become a profitable sideline… even a new core business.

Throw the dice again. This will determine where in the unknown your company might land. What are the ethical constraints? What will be the role of government and how will licensing authorities adapt? What patent protection will be available?

This is the scariest board game ever. The ladders soar towards domination of a huge new market. The snakes send your company sliding; unlimited spending with zero return. Taking part is compulsory since your existing markets could be destroyed by the arrival of newer technologies.
