On the morning of April 7, 2014, India wokeup to the news of a USD 3.2 Billion domestic acquisition of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. resulting in creation of the largest pharmaceutical company in India and fifth-largest specialty generics company in the world. This news followed the news of successful cross-border acquisition of Agila Specialities from Strides Arcolab by Mylan Laboratories for USD 1.75 billion and domestic acquisition of Elder Pharma by Torrent Pharma for around USD 300 Million. The news reinforced belief of many in the potential of the Indian pharmaceutical industry.
