Improved financing on the stock market, stagnation in revenues and employee numbers, declining spending on R&D ? 2013 was something of a mixed year for the German biotechnology sector. Nevertheless, the interest from big business in biotech products remains steady, not only in the healthcare industry but increasingly also in the area of the bioeconomy. The number of jobs places in dedicated biotechnology companies fell slightly to 16,950 (-2.8?%). Against the previous year, the total number of these companies increased to 570 (+0.9?%), including 13 -ups ? 7 fewer than 2012.

In addition, there were 130 firms active in biotechnology as only one aspect of business (2012: 128). A total of 18,450 people worked in the biotechnology-related areas of these companies (+3.9?%). Thus, in the year 2013, there were 35,400 jobs places in commercial biotechnology in Germany. The financing situation has undergone a positive development, with around 400 million euros capital raised (+16,3?%). These are the central conclusions of the company survey carried out by the information platform biotechnologie.de at the beginning of 2013 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The data were gathered in accordance with the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
