Abstract

 

Report by Cambridge Mphil student Nicola Perrin on how the UK's strengths in stem cell research can be translated into commercial opportunities within the global market.

 

The UK is recognised as a world leader in stem cell research. What are the UK’s strengths in the area? Can they be translated into commercial value? This project considers the trade opportunities for the stem cell sector.

 

While there are unlikely to be returns from stem cell therapies within 10-20 years, research applications, using cell lines for drug discovery, have real potential in the short term. How is the UK placed to exploit these technologies? What are the prospects in a global market? The opportunities and threats posed by the US, Asia, Scandinavia and Europe are assessed. International collaborations will be crucial for the UK to maintain its competitive advantage.
