Scotland’s life sciences sector has a bright and exciting future based on:
• its research and continued scientific excellence
• its business growth
• the creation of sustainable, high-quality jobs, and
• delivering improved health for people in Scotland and across the world.

This Strategy has been drawn up for, and in consultation with, the life sciences   community in Scotland. It sets out a national vision for the life sciences over the next 15 years, against a fast-changing background both internationally and in Scotland. It identifies specific themes, objectives for the next 3 to 5 years and actions that need to be addressed in the short term.

The Strategy development was overseen by the Scottish Life Sciences Industry Advisory Group (details at the end of this document). This group along with other senior industry representatives and key stakeholders will review the Strategy annually to make it a living document, reflecting changes in the global marketplace, the public and private sector as well as advances in the underlying science and technology.

Our definition of the life sciences sector includes human and animal therapeutics and diagnostics, medical devices, biomanufacturing, Contract Research Organisations, and pharmaceutical companies. It also encompasses the marine, plant, environmental, veterinary and industrial uses of life sciences.
