The Biotechnology Liaison Committee, in conjunction with the Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, and other Australian Government, State and Territory agencies, has developed Australia’s National Bioinformatics Strategy.

 

Bioinformatics is an enabling platform technology integrating biotechnology, computer science, mathematics and information technology to investigate and interpret biological data. It can add value to biotechnology research and development, and improve the international competitiveness of bio-industries in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, environmental management and health.

 

The National Bioinformatics Strategy addresses several key themes, including infrastructure, education and training, research and development, commercialisation, and coordination. It compares Australia with international best practice and identifies niche areas for Australian bioinformatics development.

 

The National Bioinformatics Strategy was developed in consultation with key industry experts and Australian Government, State and Territory officials.
