Safe, accessible health and social care, of high quality and based on public need. This is the issue at the heart of the Swedish Strategy for eHealth.  The potential of ICT is currently
underexploited: the technology is not applied to help develop activities optimally, or to tailor health and social care to individuals and their needs. It is not used for optimal improvement and efficiency in health and social care so that planning and collaboration between actors becomes easier.

 

People today are increasingly mobile, geographically as well as within and between different
levels in the various health and social care services.  The provision of good, accessible, safe and efficient health and social care often requires that information about the needs and procedures of patients and users must follow the individual, regardless of which care
provider they are using. Monitoring and follow-up of the quality of health and social care also rest on information. An efficient supply of information in health and social care will however require long-term development in a number of stages. It is not simply a matter of the purely technical ability of systems to cooperate; the information that the ICT system is to handle ? the content ? must also be relevant and well-defined. National and international development
work is under way in this field, but if we are to achieve results we must coordinate the work of a number of different actors.

 

 

This is why the Swedish Swedish Strategy for eHealth was created. Representatives of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR), the National Board of Health and Welfare, the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies and Carelink drafted the strategy and agreed on a vision of health
and social care in tune with the present and equipped for the future. Using ICT as a tool to improve care activities will open up information, good services and opportunities for influence to the public. Staff will be able to spend more time on people and less on administration, and those responsible for health and social care will be able to monitor and improve safety
