Sweden’s transformation into an ever more advanced knowledge society characterised by a
high utilisation of technology demands a long-term knowledge strategy. The purpose of this
strategy should be to enhance the quality of life through outstanding research, strengthened
innovation capacity, growth and sustainable resource utilisation. Society’s responsibility to
promote human quality of life is also a reason for supporting knowledge production that does
not yield growth directly. The long view is called for, since momentous, innovative
breakthroughs in knowledge are often unexpected, and are not seldom preceded by decades of basic research. The research has often taken place in environments where researchers from various disciplines have collectively moved it forward. Large-scale investment in basic research of the very highest quality yields answers not only to questions we have posed but also to ones we have not yet put into words. Free basic research thereby helps us identify developments in, for example, the global environment, and attempt to tackle problems before they get out of hand. The initial report of the Globalisation Council indicates that we now face challenges of a partially new types - challenges that create tremendous needs for strong basic research.......(계속)
