This report is based on a colloquium, sponsored by the American Academy of Microbiology, convened November 2008 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The American Academy of Microbiology is the honorifi c leadership group of the American Society for Microbiology. The mission of the American Academy of Microbiology is to recognize scientifi c excellence and foster knowledge and understanding in the microbiological sciences. The Academy strives to include underrepresented scientists in all its activities.
