Advanced Manufacturing Australia (AMAus) Submission to the Review of the National Innovation System April, 2008
In February 2008 the Australian Government sought submissions from a variety of sources to a review of our national innovation capabilities, encouraging strategic thinking and fresh ideas. It is suggested that "innovating and being innovative is a creative problem-solving process designed to produce practical outcomes. The outcome of this process is the introduction of novel solutions to real problems, needs or opportunities". Advanced Manufacturing, Australia (AMAus) is a not-for-profit industry association with mainly SME members who have seen more change in the last decade than in the preceding 25 years.
Survival has meant doing something different, so from that point of view at least some of our members would be regarded as innovative. The following submission reflects the experience gained through this period of change, and our response moving forward. It also supports a recent UK Government white paper observation about the changing face of innovation - “In the past, innovation was thought of as a simple process of investment in fundamental research leading to commercialisation by far-sighted management in industry. This process has traditionally been supported by supply-side initiatives. However, innovation draws on a wide variety of sources and is driven as much by demand as by supply. The insights generated by basic science are critical to long-term innovation performance but the path they follow from the laboratory to the marketplace is long, complex and uncertain.”
