This report assesses our progress towards making the UK a world leader in skills, employment and productivity by 2020.
The Current Challenge
Today, we are facing unparalleled and unpredictable challenges. After 15 years of continuous growth, we are in a globa recession that may be the deepest in 80 years. Employment is falling and unemployment is rising. The impact on the economy and society will be far-reaching. To secure economic renewal – to emerge from the recession stronger, more adaptable, more competitive – will demand bold and concerted action. We must focus not only on how to survive the recession, but on how we will thrive in the years ahead.
