 Australian Community Attitudes Held About NanoTechnology 

? Trends 2005 TO 2011

Introduction

To help inform the considerations by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and
Research (DIISR) in relation to nanotechnology and implications for a nanotechnology strategy in Australia a series of national random telephone surveys of up to n=1,100 people aged 16 years and over have been conducted during the years 2005 to 2011 to measure community awareness and attitudes towards nanotechnology.

In 2005 and 2007 the sample size each year was n=1,000 telephone interviews conducted across Australia using statistically representative random sampling techniques.

The 2008 to 2011 surveys reported in the following pages provide more recent measures of
community awareness and attitudes held towards nanotechnology covering n=1,100 randomly ed people in each year 2008, 2009 and 2011 with residents of households living in metropolitan, regional, and rural areas of Australia conducted through telephone interviews using representative random sampling techniques (Note:  in 2011 the random telephone interviews were supplemented by an Online Survey interview).   In 2008, 2009 and 2011 the large scale surveys also included a series of “intensive qualitative interviews” conducted with n=100 randomly ed respondents in each year to help support the large scale surveys through gaining detailed “qualitative” insights about public opinion towards nanotechnology.

In 2011 (and earlier in 2009) a series of indepth focus group discussions were also conducted with segments of the Australian community living  in Sydney, Melbourne and the regional town of Cowra, NSW.  The focus groups were conducted prior to the 2011 large scale community survey to help review and set the 2011 survey questions (and this also included assessing new specific issues and questions requested by broader nanotechnology stakeholders to DIISR to be included in the 2011 survey).
