Developing tomorrow’s scientists today :

An Annual Skills Report for the Life Science industries 2012

Introduction

Cogent, the Sector Skills Council for the science-based industries, has launched its Skills Action Plan for Growth in UK Life Sciences. The Plan brings together the interests of key sections of UK Life Sciences community, to ensure skills development meets industry needs. The Skills Action Plan, in part, responds to the Government’s important Plan for Growth.

This outlines measures to ensure UK educators provide the skilled individuals the emerging life sciences sector needs to flourish. It also made clear Cogent’s role, working with partners, in ensuring this happens.

Life Sciences are at the forefront of innovation that will radically alter the way society caters for healthcare (as well as, in time, industrial production).

Over 3 million are employed in the field today, but as biotechnology opens up new markets in medicine, advanced manufacturing and low carbon production, there will be a heightened demand for a highly skilled and scientifically literate UK workforce.

As illustrated in figure 1 (page 6), the wider bioeconomy has potential to stretch across many areas of our economy. This action plan initially focuses on healthcare because of its economic importance and the structural change that is unfolding today, driven by international markets. In the decade ahead, it is acknowledged that innovation in biotechnology could radically alter the structures of industry, production, research, and healthcare in our society and no doubt the skills issues we are tackling here will have wider application throughout the bioeconomy.
