Research and development (R&D) for new products to prevent, diagnose, and treat neglected diseases of the developing world is both scientically and nancially challenging. Understanding how biotechnology companies function and what they contribute to neglected disease R&D is essential to understanding how we can optimize investments in much-needed new product development. In March 2012, BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) released a report showing for the rst time that as of September 2011, small to medium-sized biotechnology companies are participating in 41% of the drug and vaccine projects in development for the neglected diseases. at report, Developing New Drugs and Vaccines for Neglected Diseases of the Poor: e Product Developer Landscape (referred to in this report as the Product Developer Landscape), identied 104 biotechnology companies participating in the development of 153 separate drugs and vaccines for 16 of the 23 neglected diseases evaluated by BVGH.
