The German Biotechnology Sector 2013
Higher turnover, more employees and more companies ? the economic indicators for the German biotechnology sector headed onwards and upwards in 2012. The financing environment also saw a recovery, although few companies found access to capital. R&D expenditure was again significantly below the one billion mark. The ongoing appeal of German companies is amply demonstrated by record high figures for takeovers, and it has been ten years since the sector has seen so many -ups. These are just some of the conclusions to be drawn from the biotechnologie.de survey on the German biotechnology sector, which was conducted on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in compliance with the guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Summary
German biotechnology continued its growth in 2012. This is underlined by record turnover of 2.9 billion euros (+11%) and an increase in the number of employees in the dedicated biotechnology companies ? i.e. those dealing predominantly with biotechnology ? to 17,430 (+7%). In comparison to the previous year, the number of such companies increased to a total of 565 (+2%), including 20 -ups. Alongside the dedicated companies there were 128 companies partially active in biotechnology (2011: 126). 17,760 people were employed in the biotechnology-oriented areas of these companies (2011: 17,570), giving a total of 35,190 jobs in commercial biotechnology in 2012 in Germany.
Several German biotechnology companies could report successes in drug development, while others suffered setbacks in the course of the year. A look at the pipeline shows that compared to 2011, the total number of drug candidates in clinical trials dropped from 109 to just 93. Total research and development expenditure also saw a slight fall ? at 934 million euros. These are the central findings of the company survey carried out by the information platform biotechnologie.de on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). All of the data are in compliance with the guidelines of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
