□ 美 국립보건원은 BRAIN* 이니셔티브의 목표 달성을 위한 2단계 연구비 지원에 착수하였으며 2015 회계연도에 8,500만 달러를 투자할 계획을 발표
* BRAIN: Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies
ㅇ 미국 및 8개 국가의 125개 기관에 종사하는 131명의 연구자에게 총 3,800만 달러를 상회하는 67개 신규과제를 지원할 계획

ㅇ 금번 과제들은 신경회로 기능을 이해하고 행동 시의 뇌의 동적 영상을 확보하기 위한 美 국립보건원의 노력을 확대할 것임
ㅇ 과제들에는 부드러운 자가 추진 전극, 뇌 활동을 측정하기 위한 초음파 방법 개발 및 외상성 뇌 손상 치료를 위한 뇌 자극법의 활용 등을 포함
□ 2014년 미 대통령 오바마는 알츠하이머병, 정신분열, 간질, 외상성 뇌 손상 등 다양한 종류의 뇌 질환을 치료하기 위한 본질적인 통찰력을 연구자들에게 갖도록 하기 위한 대규모 노력으로써 BRAIN 이니셔티브를 출범시킴
ㅇ 이러한 새로운 도구들과 보다 깊은 이해는 세계보건기구 추산 전 세계 10억명 이상이 고통받고 있는 뇌 이상 및 질환에 대한 새로운 치료법 개발을 궁극적으로 촉진할 것으로 전망
ㅇ BRAIN 이니셔티브 내 NIH 부분에 대한 계획은 장기 과학계획인 BRAIN 2025: 7개 주요 연구분야에 대한 과학적인 비전에 따라 진행되고 있음
- 작년의 BRAIN 이니셔티브 연구에 미 국립보건원은 4,600만 달러를 투자
