BBSRC supports a broad research base in microbial, plant and animal sciences, ranging from studies at the molecular to whole organism and population level. The remit also embraces engineering and technological approaches necessary to develop new procedures to investigate and analyse biological systems, as well as the application of those approaches to derive commercial benefit from biological understanding.

The UK possesses considerable strength in life sciences research, as most recently evidenced in the July 2004 article in Nature: “The Scientific Impact of Nations”. Earlier this year a report from Evidence UK showed that the outputs from UK biosciences continue to be of world standing where, in particular, it showed:

? an upward trend in share of world citations over the period 1993-2002, remaining second to the USA throughout;

? that the share of citations relative to the share of publications in 2002 was 1.31, again second only to the USA, and indicated that UK life science publications have a greater impact than competitor countries.

BBSRC supports research in over 80 universities, with 75% of grant funding going to 19 institutions. We also fund work in 7 BBSRC-sponsored institutes, g mainly on agriculture, environment, plant and animal sciences, and food.
