Thiol isomerases facilitate disulfide bond modification, thereby regulating protein folding in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), a prototypic thiol isomerase, has 5 and 21 family members in yeast and mammals, respectively (Benham, 2012). Previous studies with genetic deletion of PDI revealed that the PDI gene is essential for yeast viability, probably due to its critical role during protein synthesis (LaMantia et al., 1991).
