"Identifying Needs in Materials Design for Biomedical Applications"

1. Introduction

The workshop was held in Brussels on Monday, February 1 st 2010 and Tuesday, February 2 nd. It gathered 12 distinguished scientists from European academies, clinics and industries together with other 5 high level experts in legal issues, financing and regulatory affairs as well as participants from several EU bodies.

Frequently, progress in products and new technologies is enabled (or delayed) due to the
development (or lack) of suitable materials. Too often, new solutions are not impl emented as
successfully as expected due to non -technological bottlenecks, showing the need of a more thorough system atic approach. Therefore, the main objective of the workshop was to identify bottlenecks and then recommend EU priority actions in the field of research in materials for biomedical applications with realistic potential for industrial development and how to progress on the successful design of materials with improved in-service performance.

Research in materials for biomedical applications is and has been financially supported in the 7 thand in previous Framework Programmes, mainly by the NMP Theme managed by the Directorate for Industrial Technologies at Direction General for Research (DG RTD) inside the European Commission (EC). Such support may well continue, but how to make it more effective?
